I learned some great theology today. God get’s pleasure when I’m a doofus. I am regularly a doofus and find myself mourning over my doofus-hood often. I find no real lasting pleasure when I do doofus things. I hate my doofus activities. But, God’s enjoys it.
Watch the video at the end of Denny Burk’s good analysis of Rick Warren on the Colbert Report.
Wow, not quite sure how to quantify my thoughts after watching that video clip! A couple things that come to mind … a fundamental Christian is now a bad thing? Am I missing something here? I think people are equating fundamentalism to being extreme legalists or something. That’s certainly not my view but unfortunately it’s probably the distorted picture many people have of Christians these days.
Another thing I found interesting was actually in the reader comments where a few people commented that Colbert is a (possible) Christian. Now I’m certainly not one to judge, I just found it interesting that in the interview he kept saying to Rick “your God” this and “your God” that, etc. I would never have expected him, a Hollywood entertainer, to say “my God” or even “our God”, but seems like he could have just said “God” this or “God” that, etc. Instead, he seemed to intentionally separate himself from God through the choice of his words. This didn’t surprise me at all when I watched the clip, I just found it surprising to hear people comment that Colbert was a Christian.
Sorry for the long comment (told you I was getting sucked in!). Last thing I wanted to comment on was Colbert asking Rick about stoning homosexuals. I was really hoping to hear Rick address this question even though it was thrown out more as a punchline than an actual question (as Denny mentioned…not the right venue for this sort of discussion). I thought that Rick, given his ministry emphasis, might comment on how we hate the sin but not the sinner. Then again, I suppose it probably wouldn’t have worked because Rick would have had to say on national TV that homosexuality is a sin. Imagine that!!
Welcome to the best way to waste your time in the Lord.
Amen to your comments. There is much to say about the clip and Colbert. I don’t know how Colbert would define his Christianity. That would be interesting to find out.
