I would consider myself a slightly above-average reader, but by no means a speed reader.
To survive in seminary, I learned to read very fast but unfortunately retained very little. It was mass exposure with little time to thoughtfully interact and digest the material.
I've noticed since finishing seminary that my reading rate has slowed down again, but reading has become enjoyable again, instead of just a mechanical chore to finish an assignment. I have never gone through one of these speed-reading courses, but would be curious if they really do work at increasing both reading rate and comprehension.
